For all its might, Fortnite and its creator Epic Games have done a grand job in showcasing the perils Web2 gaming to the entire world.

As reported last week, the world’s most played game in 2023 reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), requiring it to pay over $245 million to hundreds of thousands of players around the world. Things kick off this week with over 600,000 US-based players being refunded over $72 million, averaging at $114 per player.

Just think…$114 equates to around 280,500 $PIKA tokens… meaning not only were victims subject to cold-hard theft, but also a huge opportunity cost given PIKA’s green candle destiny.

The worst part…it was all too easy…

Dubbed “design tactics known as dark patterns to trick players into making unwanted purchases,” Fortnite players were subject to several unwanted payment schemes.

• Charged when attempting to wake the game from sleep mode.
• Charged when on the loading screen.
• Charged when pressing an adjacent button when attempting to preview an item.

That’s all without Epic Games being perfectly fine with its child-centric audience building unauthorized bills that were void of any parental permission.

This is simply insane.

It’s also a huge awakening for the money-hungry Web2 gaming space, which for a number of years has become more and more exploitative.
